"No preach" is the appeal of our music! If we can make the listeners happy, that's enough!
An exciting interview with three cutie girls from Germany
(Interview with memebers of Arabesque for japanese newspaper " Go Rocking" ¹ 12 for 10.06.1982)
This interview was kindly translated from japanede language by Jorge Takamuki, the big fan of Arabesque from Japan specially for www.discostars80.com. Special thanks to him

We are fans of all japanese men!

(Male Japanese) Reporter :Michaela, Sandra, Jasmin... When I sat in front of the three beauties with the scent of perfume from Germany showing sexy legs, my hearts beats faster, and my eyes started to blink! To tell the truth, I wanted to hear some juicy stories. But, if I'm impolite for them, I will spoil all Japanese men's reputation. Then, I thought, "I should talk to them earnestly, I should do it straight!" And, I started the battle. But when I heard their German-accented English, I felt my upper body getting stiff beyond necessity... But, the three beauties are just universal young ladies, they are cute and lovely. We had a good time with them in an early summer day!

We met him on a TV program, we fell in love with 'Tetsuya Takeda' at first sight!

Reporter : I heard this is the third visit to Japan. Do you have a good time in Japan?

Jasmin : Yes! We are enjoying it very much! But, I'm sorry there's no time for going around many places and for a shopping...

Reporter : You spend much time on the stages, right?

Jasmin : Oh, yes. and many interviews...

Reporter : Speaking of German women, (I think) they have a staid image, but you all don't look so.

Jasmin : You're exactly right. But German people(girls) are always holding their emotions in their inside. Truly, they are very friendly, but many German people(girls) don't show their bad aspects to the outside, and put them into inside. That's why they sometimes can't express their emotions very well.

Reporter : A-ha! They look like Japanese people(girls)! But you don't look so!

Michaela : Oh, yes! We express our feelings directly!

Reporter : You are very generous and open-minded, aren't you?

Arabesque - Thank you!

Reporter : The other day, you appeared on "Yoruno-Hit Studio"(TV program - "The Hit Studio In The Night", what sort of impressions did you get on the performances on the Japanese TV show?

Jasmin : We had a good time! I have a good impression! In Germany, it will take three days to shoot the same TV program!

Reporter : Wow, three days??

Jasmin : They need just one day in Japan! It was perfect and fantastic!

Michaela : In Germany, the TV shows are uptight and square. If we made a little mistake, they will shoot again and again. In Japan, we will be forgiven, if it's just a small mistake.

Reporter : That's amazing! Japanese singers grumble their complaint for only one day unfreedom.

Jasmin : We don't think so! Besides, the decorations on the stages are also fantastic! It's wonderful they make over(change) the stage sets for each performers over and over!

Reporter : Do you think some of them aren't big deal?( unskilled ?)

Michaela : No, we don't! Instead, the guy sat in front of us... Hey, what's he's name? Taka... The guy is not so tall, and he has a long hair like this(gesture of long hair).

Jasmin : He's chubby...

Reporter : Hmm, it doesn't ring a bell...

Michaela : He's very fantastic!

Reporter : Is he "Hiromi Go"??

Jasmin : No, no.... He's older. He's very fantastic! He's wonderful!

Michaela : (To The Manager) Hey, who's that guy who sang before us? I don't recall his name, "taka - something"...??

Manager : Oh! His name is "Tetsuya Takeda"!

Reporter : Unbelievable!! Is he?? Tetsuya Takeda is Japanese singer and actor who sometimes plays comical roles.

Jasmin : I think he is very polite and charming. His song was good, too! I'm interested in him very much!

Reporter : I'm surprised! But, he's not handsome, is he??

Michaela : But it's a funny thing! He doesn't have handsome mask, but charming! Handsome men are not always good, right??

Reporter : I see! I quite agree with you!

In this interview, Jasmin took the lead. The youngest girl, Sandra doesn't seem to be good at speaking English, so she just listened while we're talking. Michaela, the original member of Arabesque is a brown-skinned exotic beauty. She sometimes tell us jokes, she is a merry type. (cheerful ). Jasmin is a sportswoman. She always has her own opinions. "She has a very beautiful natural face!", so her Translator said, who had a dinner together with Jasmin... In this Japan Tour, the road manager who invited Arabesque to Japan said, "They became very more beautiful than before! So, I'm impressed very much!" Actually the three girls are very charming! I'll do my best to know them better!

Now, the new type of music which is called "german wave" are very trendy in Germany.

Reporter : By the way, what kind of music is popular in Germany?

Jasmin : Now, the new type of music called "German Wave" are very trendy. Until last year, there was a mood that every songs should be sung in English in Germany, but in this year, there came the "German Wave", and people pays much more attention to them!

Reporter : What kind of music is that?

Jasmin : They sounds like R&R, it's ridiculously simple (music), all songs are sung in German. They are very popular this year!

Michaela : They're monotone sound, but now it's big in Germany!

Reporter : Are they like Kraftwerk?

Arabesque : Kraftwerk!! They're the number one band in Germany!

Sandra : Their records are the top seller, too!

Reporter : Do you like techno-pop like Kraftwerk?

Arabesque :Yes, yes!! Depends on what they sing... (Opinion was divided.)

Reporter : Their rhythm is very technological and very constant.

Jasmin : That's the "Fashion"! Two years ago, nobody liked them. But now lots of people are very supportive of them! It's a kind of the trend, I think.

Reporter : Some people might think they aren't humanly...

Jasmin : I admit that the 'techno-pop' are not humanly, but the world seems to be crazy. There's trend that "the new is good" among young people.

Reporter : Oh, it's just like Japan!

Jasmin : It's crazy. But young people seems to find values just because it's new.

Reporter : Do you feel the same when you see young people in Japan?

Jasmin : As far as I can see on TV, some are the 'punk', but the other are not 'punk'. I don't feel only Japan is very special.

Reporter : But I heard that you went to Harajuku. Did you watch "Takenoko-zoku"?

Michaela : I missed watching their dancing, but I went to the shop that sells their clothes.

Reporter : Did you want them for the stage costumes?

Jasmin : Those costumes of "Takenoko-zoku" look like 'punk'. But we don't like punk costumes, so I don't want to wear them on the stages at all.

Takenoko-Zoku is outdoor performance groups especially in Harajuku, Tokyo. See at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jslBNqKd11I

The secret to sing long-lasting songs' is to keep our own style.

Reporter : Do you hate punk?

Jasmin : Yes, I do. Because, the current punk movement is temporary. I think it won't last long. We take a very long-term view, and we would like to sing the songs which will survive much longer.

Reporter : Do you know the secrets to let the music survive long?

Jasmin : I think we should keep our way of singing and the style of the music. But, this year, it changed a little bit. Next year, it will change much further. But we don't mean to change them into 'New-wave', only because that is the trend of this year.

Reporter : I hear Arabesque is the top seller in foreign chart in Japan, and it's more than ABBA!

Arabesque : Wow! It's fantastic! (In joyful voices!)

Michaela : ABBA sells well massively in Europe. It's our great pleasure to be able to do that! Reporter - Do you know why?

Jasmin : I'm not quite sure. Maybe, because our style is not a thing to 'preach' .

Michaela : I think it's because we are happy when we sing, so our songs can make every listeners happy!

Reporter : Oh, I see!

Jasmin : If we can make every listeners happy, that's enough! If they come to listen to our music just to forget their daily business, that will be fine!

Reporter : I would like to ask all of you about Japanese men. What do you think about Japanese men compared to European men?

Jasmin : Compared to German boys, Japanese boys are very shy:)

Reporter : Were there nice guys in Japan?

Arabesque : Oh, yeah! (with charming smiles) Yes! There are many nice guys!!:)

Reporter : So many?

Michaela : At the corner of the street, at the coffee shop, and at the tennis court... They are very nice!

Arabesque :- Yes, yes! (They were excited.)

Reporter : So, what kind of man do you like?

Jasmin : It can't be explained by words...

Reporter : Well, what kind of man do you think sexy?

Jasmin : Sexy? I think of Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Michaela : I like Alain Delon and Paul Newman!

Reporter : You prefer such mature men! But, many fans of you are sixteen to eighteen years old boys. What do you think about it?

Jasmin : They are fantastic! They brought us many many presents and letters on the stage!

Michaela : We thought that shy Japanese young boys would never do that, but we found it was wrong.

Jasmin : We are fan of Japanese boys!

Michaela : At first, we were surprised they were very shy, but once we get used to it, they are handsome and very nice!

Reporter : Alright! I believe your words! Thank you for coming today!
